 UDSS
Picture

The picture on the left is actually taken of the disk controller in my MC68000 based disk exerciser; the original project where the UDSS circuit came from. Note the 3x FDC adjusment presets to the right of the FDC chip and the standard 34pin header immediately above, which interfaces to a standard PC type floppy drive cable. (The 25 way D connector at the top was the serial  connector)

DETAILS

In the following downloadable files shown below, there should be sufficient hardware and software  information to start anyone off on a UDSS project if they are interested. Some of the information however, is simply there for reference purposes.

A few notes on the actual byte level structuring of the JDOS disk format.

This is a printout of the JDOS Dump facility. THe J prompts can be seen on the printout a total of four times, along with the dumped printout of the memory contents at that time.

This is the simplified memory map for the UDSS. Very important when trying to understand exactly how the device works.

This is a dump of  an Acorn BBC B disk showing the absolute information from a disk sector. Well you see its like this... I was given a BBC computer with a single disk but no FORMAT disk to make new disks with. So what better use to put the new UDSS to? BEEB FORMAT program on the UDSS will change the encoding / decoding from MFM to FM  then will format a disk to be used with the BBC DFS (disk filing system). And it really works!!
